                                                                                           Teaching

Reasonable adjustments must take place during teaching and learning activities to lessen or remove
the effects of a disadvantage to a learner with a disability.
         Reasonable adjustments can include: Teaching

         • Ensuring access to areas, rooms and toilets.

         • Offering facilities to meet various needs, for example, diet options, prayer rooms,
handouts in different fonts/sizes/colours, adjustable desks, lifts, loop/minicom systems,
           interpreters etc.

         • Using activities that all can participate in and that don’t exclude anyone for any reason

         What is diversity?

Diversity is about valuing and respecting the differences in people, regardless of ability and/or
circumstances, or any other individual characteristics they may have. If you have two or more
learners, you will experience diversity. Learners are entitled to be treated with respect, with their
differences acknowledged and taken into consideration.

         Valuing equality and advancing diversity
                                                                                                                         Administration
You should be positive and pro-active
         where equality and diversity are
         concerned and may have to
         challenge your own attitudes, values
and beliefs. As a professional, you
are first and foremost a teacher, and
         your personal opinions must not
         interfere with the teaching and
         learning process.

         The term promoting was previously
used in discrimination legislation, this has been replaced with the word advancing - the intention being
to move forward, to get somewhere and for your learners to achieve.

When teaching, always include learners in relevant activities during sessions, and throughout the full
learning process, rather than excluding anyone for any reason. The best way to ensure this is to ask Lesson Plans
them what they need. If asked, learners will usually say what their needs are, whether that is from a
religious or cultural point of view, or if they have a particular need in terms of a disability or otherwise.
However, it's difficult to help learners if they don't state any specific issues, needs or concerns they
         might have.

Try and ascertain what a learner can do rather than what they can’t do. However, any adjustments to
the learning process would have to be reasonable, and not seen as favouritism by other learners.
