Finally how would you adapt different assessment methods to meet learner needs??
Feedback
Giving feedback in a natural way that is not critical is
a difficult skill to attain. Nevertheless, it is an essential
skill which trainers need to learn. Feedback informs
us of the knowledge base of the candidates.
Feedback should always be constructive and promote positive learning. Even when a Administration
correction is needed this should be done in a manner that leaves the candidate feeling positive.
It is helpful to start feedback by asking the candidate, how they thought they did?
Most individuals will have a basic ‘feeling’ of what they have achieved. It also helps you, as the trainer,
to ascertain if the candidate has a realistic perception of their skills.
Feedback is at the heart of formative assessment remember these points when delivering feedback:
• Give the feedback as soon as possible after the event
• Always begin with something positive that the candidate has done.
• If something was not done to the required standard, then be specific and offer an alternative way
of performing the task.
• Select priority areas, don’t give too much feedback at any one time because the person won’t take
it all in – particularly if it’s negative
• Try to give choices to the candidate for alternative ways of accomplishing this task. Lesson Plans
• Remember the feedback is your opinion, so you must use words such as ‘me’ and ‘I’.
• Remember to finish with something positive – this is the last impression that is left with the
candidate.
As part of your assessment criteria you will need to seek feedback from 3 of your peers. Using the
sheet on the next page, have a think about the wording and the structure of the feedback you will
give.
