          Teaching

Assessment can be in two forms:
Teaching • Formative Assessment – this helps us to know how well the candidates are learning and how

good the training is during the course of the training.

         • Summative Assessment – this assessment allows the candidate to see what they can do at the
end of the session. This can involve an exam or tests.

There are a number of methods for assessing candidates:

         • Observation - watching the candidates perform manual handling tasks
         • Examination - the outcomes of manual handling exercises
         • Questioning - ask them to feel for the arms of the chair
         • Written Exam - watch for their movements
Administration In practical subject areas, it is important that the candidate can match theoretical knowledge with
         • Self Reporting - as clients sits, carer must bend their knees - no twisting

practical skills. Therefore, the assessment should reflect the different level of skills required.
N.B. Although a written exam/test can be informative, it must be remembered that many individuals
         find exams a negative experience.

This is the means of internal assessment. External assessment also exits. This is whereby someone,
not the trainer, comes into overlook the assessment practice. This is by way of verifying that the
assessment practice is right and fair. This also helps with the standardisation of practice across the
spectrum. The role of the verifier has been given in the Introduction section of this book.

         Self and peer assessment

These are important aspects of assessment for learning practice
Assessing their own work or that of others can help learners develop their understanding of learning
Lesson Plans objectives and success criteria Research has shown that learners make more progress when they

are actively involved in their own learning and assessment.

         Developing self and peer assessment

The development of effective self and peer assessment takes considerable time and effort. However,
once fully embedded into teaching and learning, they can be particularly effective in motivating pupils
to move forward in their learning, thereby facilitating teaching. Teachers and trainers who have
reached this stage are generally enthusiastic about the beneficial effects on pupils and teachers

Working in groups: Identify different methods of assessment and compare their strengths and
limitations in relation to meeting individual needs.
