Teaching
Functional Skills
Functional skills are skills that candidates need to utilise in order Teaching
to function successful in the community, workplace or indeed any
environment. The level of skill required depends upon the
complexity of the situation and level of skill required. As a trainer
you will need to incorporate Functional Skills into your lesson. You
can do this by fully embedding the Skill into your lesson or by
addressing it as a discrete subject. The three main areas of
Functional Skills are as follows:
Numeracy: Maths which includes processing, representing, analysing and interpreting data.
Literacy: English which includes speaking, writing, reading and listening.
ICT: Use of Computers which includes using software for communicating and presenting information.
Administration
Working in groups: Identify the functional skills used in your subject area and break them down into
the specific tasks that you might use to embed them.

some of the different methods available for assessing. We will then consider the purpose of
evaluating your practice and how to ensure a process of continuous improvements in your teaching. Lesson Plans
