        CHAPTER 3

Learning outcome 3: to deliver planned interactive learning sessions and assess the progress Teaching
        and achievement of learners.

        Lesson plans

The next step is to then detail the content even further. This is done in the form of a lesson plan. It
provides a detailed insight into what happens at each stage of your class.

        Aims and Objectives/Learning Outcomes

The Aim of the course provides a one sentence general
description of what is intended with the course. This is
what attracts candidates to the course - it is your selling
point. When designing and ordering your own Manual
Handling course, you should think about what you want to Administration
achieve in the session; what is the purpose of the course?
A well written objective/learning outcome is likely to
        contain the following elements:

         • A verb that indicates what the learner is expected to be able to do at the end of the course.
         • Words that indicate on what (or with what) the learner is acting. As Manual Handling is an active
skill, the word may describe the way in which the skill is performed i.e. demonstrate biomechanics
(centre of gravity, stable base, short lever should all be a part of the demonstration).
         • Words that indicate the nature of the performance required as evidence that the learning was
             achieved (i.e. explain, present, demonstrate)

The Objectives/Learning Outcomes comprise smaller ‘bite sized’ chunks. These chunks break down
the overall aim into a format which allows us to check whether our training actually achieved what was
        expected.

EXERCISE - Aims and Objectives Lesson Plans

TO DO - Individually / pairs draft aims and objectives for a fictitious lesson – 15 mins. approx.

        For example:

Aim: to understand the principles in making a tasty cup of tea

        Objectives:

        1) to demonstrate an understanding of the principles in making a ‘good’ cup of tea by completing a
            short quiz

        2) to demonstrate the principles in good tea making by preparing a cup of tea that passes the ‘taste’ Handouts
            test

© Copyright 2021 Abertay International Training Ltd
