Teaching
S - Specific: what is exactly being taught?
Teaching M - Measurable: how do you know that this has been achieved?
A - Achievable: is it possible to achieve this goal?
R - Realistic: is it a realistic objective/learning outcome?
T - Time Bound: can it be done in the time frame?
A simple method of checking if the objectives/learning outcomes have
been achieved is to use the S.M.A.R.T format. This encourages the
objectives/learning outcomes to be clear and precise. In order to measure
the objectives/learning outcomes, verbs should be used which can be
easily observed and measured.
Rule of thumb a typical lesson plan should include the following:
a Recap of previous knowledge (including review of marked homework).
Administration b Introduction and statement of aim of the lesson.
c Main or primary development.
d Consolidation.
e Recap and summary so far (homework where applicable).
A typical time allocation for a one-hour lesson would be:
Recap including review of homework 10 minutes
Introduction and aim 5 minutes
Primary development 25 minutes
Consolidation (largely candidate practice) 15 minutes
Recap, summary and homework assignment 5 minutes
The above timings are merely a guide and are not intended to be an unnecessary and undesirable
constraint on the trainer, who must reserve the right to modify the approach if the learning situation
Lesson Plans demands it. A rigid preparation and an inflexible attitude can turn a careful lesson plan into a strait-
jacket.
