Teaching
Teaching We all use a combination of these learning styles, but most of us prefer to learn using only one or two
of these ways. If we can learn to use both sides of the neo cortex (whole brain learning), and use
different learning styles, our learning will improve.
When we are in the classroom we need to take into account that each of the candidates sitting in front
of us will have their own learning style. In order to accommodate everyone, we must utilise a variety
of approaches when delivering our lessons. This way we know that at some point, we are catering
directly for needs of our leaners.
It would be useful to consider your own leaning style. So for example, if you had to learn a poem
now, inside a few minutes, how would you go about learning this? Would you perhaps pace the room
and recite the poem quietly? Or would you write it out and study it on the page? Everyone will have
their own approach. Now consider that you are asked, to learn the poem from watching it on a DVD
loop. How successful would you be in learning it, in the time frame given? You may find this more
Administration teaching - catering for only one learning style. This would be, not only difficult for the learners, but
difficult than others. Now imagine that you had to sit through a course that only offered one way of
also difficult for you manage the, now bored, group in front of you.
The learners in your room, all have their own preferences for picking up new topics. They all know
best how they learn. So your role, as an educator, is to meet the needs of the candidates on your
course. To do this successfully, you should employ a variety of teaching strategies, to meet the
preferred learning style of your candidates in your class. Here are some activities matched to the
preferred learning styles.
