What is First Aid for Mental Health?
First Aid for Mental Health is the initial support provided for a person experiencing a Mental Health Teaching
problem until professional help is received or until the crisis is resolved.
Everyone has Mental Health
Mental Health includes our emotional, psychological and social well-being. It affects how we think,
feel and act. Our Mental Health determines how we handle stress, relate to others and affects the
choices we make. Mental Illnesses are associated with
distress and problems functioning in our day-to-day lives
(social, work, family etc)
• 1 in 4 - Will experience a mental health problem in a year
• 1 in 6 - Report experiencing a mental health problem (like
anxiety or depression) in any given week
• 1 in 5 - Have suicidal thoughts
• 1 in 14 - People self-harm
• 1 in 15 - Attempt Suicide

Roles and Responsibilities of the First Aider for Mental Health
1. Point of Contact - For anyone experiencing a mental health problem
2. Identify - Be able to identify signs and symptoms of mental ill-health
3. Initial Support - Provide supportive ear and conversation

4. Listen - Be non-judgemental and give reassurance
5. Assess - Assess risk of self-harm and suicide
6. Signpost - Signpost and encourage further professional support
7. Reduce Stigma - Assist with efforts to reduce any stigma in the workplace
8. Emergency Services - Call the emergency services if and when required
9. Confidentiality - Provide a safe zone that is confidential
