Impacts of Mental Health
Teaching • Day-to-day - Mental health not only effects many aspects of the individual’s life but also impacts
on the family
• Work - It can be difficult to function as you would normally do, therefore work can be difficult to
maintain
• Physical Health - Mental ill-health can effect your ability to maintain your physical health
• Education - It can be difficult to maintain the concentration to study over long periods
• Parenting - Family life can be greatly affected by mental illness as it effects relationships
• Driving - Taking certain medications can affect ability to drive or being able to concentrate on

What is Stigma?
Stigma - a set of prejudicial attitudes and values, which may lead to discriminatory behaviours.
There are two main types of stigma
Social Stigma - The negative attitudes and discriminatory behaviours towards individuals with
mental ill-health
Self Stigma - Self doubts and starting to believe what is being said about their condition

• Withdrawal - Isolating yourself away from others
• Fear - A fear of disclosing you have a problem
• Employment - Difficulty in finding employment
• Victimisation - Harassment and bullying
