Youth Mental Health First Aid Trainer Course FAQs

Youth Mental Health First Aid trainer delivering YMHFA training to school staffThe Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) Trainer Award qualifies you to deliver accredited mental health first aid training specifically focused on children and young people. You will learn how to teach delegates to recognise the signs and symptoms of common mental health conditions in young people, provide initial support, and signpost to appropriate professional help. The qualification is accredited by SafeCert and is designed for anyone who works with children and young people in educational, social care, or community settings.
Mental health problems affect 1 in 6 children aged 5–16 in England, and rates have increased significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic. Common conditions include anxiety, depression, eating disorders, self-harm, and ADHD. Suicide is the leading cause of death in young people aged 15–34 in the UK. Early intervention is critical — 75% of mental health problems are established by age 24, and half of all lifetime mental health problems start by age 14. Youth Mental Health First Aid training equips staff to identify problems early and provide appropriate support.
Your Youth Mental Health First Aid Trainer certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. Mental health guidance, legislation, and best practice are updated regularly, so renewal training is essential to ensure your knowledge remains current. Abertay Training will send you a renewal reminder as your expiry date approaches.
The course covers mental health conditions that are particularly prevalent in children and young people, including: anxiety disorders (generalised anxiety, social anxiety, separation anxiety, school refusal); depression; eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, ARFID); self-harm; suicidal ideation and behaviour; attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); autism spectrum conditions; psychosis; and the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and trauma.
Warning signs of mental health problems in young people include: persistent low mood or tearfulness; withdrawal from friends, family, and activities they previously enjoyed; changes in eating or sleeping patterns; declining academic performance; increased irritability or aggression; physical complaints without medical cause (headaches, stomach aches); self-harm marks or injuries; talk of hopelessness or not wanting to be alive; and significant changes in behaviour or personality. Your training covers how to recognise these signs and respond appropriately.
Yes — the Youth Mental Health First Aid Trainer Award qualifies you to deliver accredited youth mental health training to staff in schools, colleges, universities, youth organisations, sports clubs, social care settings, and any other environment that works with children and young people. You will receive all the training materials, assessment tools, and certification resources you need to start delivering training immediately.
Youth Mental Health First Aid training is specifically designed for people who work with children and young people (typically aged 8–18). It covers the mental health conditions most commonly experienced by young people, the specific communication approaches needed when supporting a young person in distress, the role of parents and carers, and the safeguarding considerations that apply when a young person discloses a mental health concern. Adult Mental Health First Aid covers the same core principles but is focused on adult populations and workplace settings.
Schools can support students with mental health problems through a whole-school approach that includes: a clear mental health and wellbeing policy; trained Mental Health First Aiders and a designated mental health lead; a supportive and inclusive school culture; early identification and intervention; access to pastoral support and counselling; strong links with CAMHS and other external agencies; involvement of parents and carers; and a curriculum that promotes mental health literacy and resilience. Your training covers how to contribute to a whole-school approach to mental health.
