Child Protection Trainer Course FAQs

Child protection trainer delivering safeguarding training to professionalsChild protection training in the UK is underpinned by several key pieces of legislation, including the Children Act 1989 and 2004, the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006, Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023 statutory guidance), and Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE 2024 for schools). All organisations working with children are required to have appropriate safeguarding policies, designated safeguarding leads, and trained staff.
Anyone who works or volunteers with children or young people should receive child protection training appropriate to their role. This includes teachers, teaching assistants, school governors, youth workers, sports coaches, healthcare workers, social care staff, foster carers, childminders, and anyone in a position of trust with children. Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) require more in-depth training than general staff.
Your Child Protection Trainer certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. Child protection legislation, statutory guidance, and best practice are updated regularly, so renewal training is essential to ensure your knowledge remains current. Abertay Training will send you a renewal reminder as your expiry date approaches.
Safeguarding is the broader term covering all measures taken to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm, including abuse, neglect, exploitation, and radicalisation. Child protection is a specific component of safeguarding that focuses on protecting individual children who are suffering, or likely to suffer, significant harm. Both terms are used in legislation and statutory guidance, and your training covers both in detail.
The four categories of child abuse recognised in UK statutory guidance are: Physical abuse (hitting, shaking, burning, or otherwise causing physical harm); Emotional abuse (persistent emotional maltreatment affecting a child's emotional development); Sexual abuse (forcing or enticing a child to take part in sexual activities); and Neglect (persistent failure to meet a child's basic physical and/or psychological needs). Your training covers the signs and indicators of each category and how to respond appropriately.
If a child discloses abuse to you, you should: listen carefully and remain calm; not promise confidentiality; not ask leading questions; reassure the child they have done the right thing by telling you; record what was said as soon as possible using the child's own words; and report the disclosure to your Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) immediately. You should not investigate the allegation yourself. Your training covers the correct disclosure response procedure in detail.
Yes — the Child Protection Trainer Award qualifies you to deliver accredited child protection and safeguarding training to staff in schools, nurseries, children's centres, youth organisations, sports clubs, and any other setting that works with children. You will receive all the training materials, assessment tools, and certification resources you need to start delivering training immediately.
A Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is the named person in an organisation responsible for child protection and safeguarding. In schools, the DSL is usually a senior member of staff. DSLs require more in-depth training than general staff, including training in how to manage referrals to children's social care, how to work with other agencies, and how to support staff who raise safeguarding concerns. Abertay Training's Child Protection Trainer course covers DSL-level knowledge as well as general staff awareness.
