How to Start a Supportive Conversation about Mental Health
GETTING STARTED - You will help tackle any stigma on mental Teaching
health. Remember the main FACT - Mental Health problems are
very common and CAN be treated.
Think First - What do you want to say
Listen - With no judgement provide a supportive ear
Ask Open Questions - For example - ‘How are you feeling?’
Signpost - Provide advice then signpost to professional help
Listening Skills - Non Judgemental - Listening Skills - Non Judgemental
Use both verbal and non-verbal communication
Administration
• Time - Give them time to talk
• Tone - Be aware of the tone of your voice
• Body - Keep open body position (no cross arms etc)
• Sympathy - Sympathise with them with no judgement
• Listen - Really listen carefully
• Eye Contact - Maintain good eye contact
• Reflect - Think before you speak
• Relay - Summarise what they have said
When to Contact Further HELP
GETTING FURTHER HELP - if a person is in a state of crisis, you may need to seek help for them.
The level of help will depend on their condition. Lesson Plans
Family or Friends - Trusted individuals
Samaritans (116 123) - Confidential advise and support
Crisis Line - If they are already assigned to support
NHS (111) - If there is life-threatening emergencies
