Working at Heights Trainer Course FAQs

Working at heights trainer demonstrating correct harness fitting on a scaffold structureWorking at heights training in the UK is governed by the Work at Height Regulations 2005 (as amended 2007), which require employers to ensure that work at height is properly planned, supervised, and carried out by competent people. The regulations apply to any work where a person could fall a distance liable to cause personal injury — including work on ladders, scaffolding, roofs, platforms, and even at ground level adjacent to holes or excavations. Failure to comply can result in HSE enforcement action and prosecution.
The Abertay Training Working at Heights Trainer Award is the accredited qualification for anyone who wants to deliver working at heights safety training. There are no formal entry requirements, although a basic understanding of working at heights risks and equipment is beneficial. The course is suitable for health and safety officers, managers, supervisors, and anyone responsible for delivering working at heights training to their team.
Your Working at Heights Trainer certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. Working at heights regulations, equipment standards, and best practice are updated regularly, so renewal training ensures your knowledge remains current. Abertay Training will send you a renewal reminder as your expiry date approaches.
The course covers all common working at heights equipment used in UK workplaces, including: ladders (step ladders, extension ladders, roof ladders); mobile access towers (PASMA); scaffolding; mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs) including cherry pickers and scissor lifts; harnesses and fall arrest systems; safety nets and airbags; and edge protection systems. You will learn how to inspect, select, and use each type of equipment safely, and how to train others in its correct use.
The Work at Height Regulations 2005 require employers to follow a hierarchy of control: 1) Avoid work at height where possible; 2) Use work equipment or other measures to prevent falls where work at height cannot be avoided; 3) Where the risk of a fall cannot be eliminated, use work equipment or other measures to minimise the distance and consequences of a fall. This means collective fall prevention measures (guardrails, working platforms) are preferred over personal fall protection (harnesses, lanyards).
According to HSE statistics, the most common causes of fatal falls from height in UK workplaces are: falls from ladders (the single most common cause); falls from scaffolding; falls through fragile roofs or roof lights; falls from vehicles; and falls into excavations or openings. Construction, agriculture, and utilities are the highest-risk sectors. Your training covers how to prevent each type of fall through proper planning, equipment selection, and safe systems of work.
Yes — the Working at Heights Trainer Award qualifies you to deliver accredited working at heights training to staff in any industry, including construction, utilities, telecoms, facilities management, agriculture, and any other sector where work at height is carried out. You will receive all the training materials, assessment tools, and certification resources you need to start delivering training immediately.
A pre-use inspection is a visual and functional check of working at heights equipment carried out before each use to identify any damage, defects, or deterioration that could make it unsafe. Pre-use inspections are required by the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER). They are in addition to formal periodic inspections by a competent person. Your training covers how to carry out pre-use inspections for all common types of working at heights equipment.
