Safeguarding Adults Trainer Course FAQs

Safeguarding adults trainer delivering training to social care professionalsSafeguarding adults training in the UK is underpinned by the Care Act 2014 (the primary legislation for adult safeguarding in England), the Mental Capacity Act 2005, the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended), the Human Rights Act 1998, and statutory guidance including 'Care and Support Statutory Guidance' (DHSC 2023). In Scotland, the Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007 applies. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspects care providers against safeguarding standards.
Anyone who works or volunteers with adults at risk of abuse or neglect should receive safeguarding adults training appropriate to their role. This includes care home staff, domiciliary care workers, social workers, nurses, healthcare assistants, GPs, police officers, housing officers, and anyone in a position of trust with vulnerable adults. The level of training required varies by role — frontline staff need awareness training, while managers and designated safeguarding leads need more in-depth training.
Your Safeguarding Adults Trainer certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. Safeguarding legislation, statutory guidance, and best practice are updated regularly, so renewal training is essential to ensure your knowledge remains current. Abertay Training will send you a renewal reminder as your expiry date approaches.
The Care Act 2014 identifies ten categories of adult abuse: Physical abuse; Domestic violence or abuse; Sexual abuse; Psychological or emotional abuse; Financial or material abuse; Modern slavery; Discriminatory abuse; Organisational or institutional abuse; Neglect and acts of omission; and Self-neglect. Your training covers the signs and indicators of each category and how to respond appropriately.
Making Safeguarding Personal (MSP) is a sector-led initiative that emphasises placing the adult at risk at the centre of the safeguarding process. It means asking the adult what outcomes they want from the safeguarding process, involving them in decision-making, and measuring success by the outcomes achieved for the individual rather than just the process followed. MSP is embedded in the Care Act 2014 and is a key principle of modern adult safeguarding practice.
If you suspect an adult is being abused or is at risk of abuse, you should: ensure the adult is safe and provide any immediate support needed; listen to the adult and take their concerns seriously; not promise confidentiality; record what you have observed or been told as soon as possible; and report your concerns to your organisation's designated safeguarding lead or directly to the local authority adult safeguarding team. In an emergency, call 999. Your training covers the correct reporting procedure in detail.
Yes — the Safeguarding Adults Trainer Award qualifies you to deliver accredited safeguarding adults training to staff in any health or social care setting, including care homes, domiciliary care agencies, NHS trusts, GP surgeries, housing associations, and voluntary sector organisations. You will receive all the training materials, assessment tools, and certification resources you need to start delivering training immediately.
A Safeguarding Adults Review (SAR) is a multi-agency review carried out when an adult at risk dies or experiences serious harm and there is concern that agencies could have worked more effectively to protect them. SARs are similar to Serious Case Reviews (SCRs) in children's safeguarding. They are not about blame, but about learning lessons and improving practice. Key themes from published SARs include: poor information sharing between agencies; failure to recognise signs of abuse; inadequate risk assessment; and insufficient involvement of the adult in decision-making.
