Infection Control Trainer Course FAQs

Infection control trainer in PPE demonstrating handwashing technique to nursing staffInfection control training in the UK is governed by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH), and specific guidance from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and NHS England. In healthcare settings, the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 require registered providers to have effective systems to assess and manage the risk of infection. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspects against these requirements.
Infection control training is essential for anyone who works in a healthcare, social care, or any other setting where there is a risk of spreading infection. This includes nurses, healthcare assistants, care home staff, domiciliary care workers, cleaners, catering staff, school staff, childcare workers, and anyone who provides personal care or works in a clinical environment. The level of training required varies by role and risk level.
Your Infection Control Trainer certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. Infection control guidance and best practice are updated regularly (particularly following events such as the COVID-19 pandemic), so renewal training is essential to ensure your knowledge remains current. Abertay Training will send you a renewal reminder as your expiry date approaches.
Standard precautions are the minimum infection prevention and control measures that should be applied to all patients and service users at all times, regardless of their known or suspected infection status. They include: hand hygiene (the single most important measure); use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, aprons, and masks; safe handling and disposal of sharps; safe handling and disposal of clinical waste; respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette; and decontamination of equipment and the environment.
The chain of infection describes the six links that must all be present for an infection to spread: the infectious agent (pathogen); the reservoir (where the pathogen lives); the portal of exit (how the pathogen leaves the reservoir); the mode of transmission (how it travels); the portal of entry (how it enters a new host); and the susceptible host. Infection control measures work by breaking one or more of these links — for example, hand hygiene breaks the mode of transmission, and vaccination makes the host less susceptible.
The main routes of infection transmission are: contact transmission (direct contact between an infected person and a susceptible host, or indirect contact via contaminated surfaces or equipment); droplet transmission (large respiratory droplets expelled during coughing, sneezing, or talking); airborne transmission (small particles that remain suspended in the air for extended periods); and vector-borne transmission (via insects or other animals). Your training covers prevention measures for each route.
Yes — the Infection Control Trainer Award qualifies you to deliver accredited infection control training to staff in any healthcare or social care setting, including NHS hospitals, GP surgeries, care homes, domiciliary care agencies, dental practices, and schools. You will receive all the training materials, assessment tools, and certification resources you need to start delivering training immediately.
The PPE required for infection control in healthcare settings depends on the level of risk. Standard precautions typically require: disposable gloves (changed between patients and after contact with body fluids); disposable aprons (for direct patient care); fluid-resistant surgical masks (for procedures generating respiratory droplets); and eye/face protection (for procedures generating splashes). For aerosol-generating procedures (AGPs) or contact with patients with airborne infections, higher-level PPE including FFP3 respirators may be required.
