The First Aid Trainer course is 3 days (10am – 4:30pm each day), plus approximately 6–8 hours of pre-course study. You will receive the trainer manual and PowerPoint presentations before the course starts. The course includes both the Level 3 First Aid Trainer / Assessor Award and the PDLSG teaching qualification at no extra cost.
The extra day compared to other trainer courses reflects the breadth of first aid content — covering CPR, AED use, choking, bleeding, fractures, burns, and much more — that you will need to teach confidently.

Your First Aid Trainer / Assessor Award is typically valid for 3 years. However, it is strongly recommended to complete refresher training every 3 years and maintain annual CPD (Continuing Professional Development) to stay current with resuscitation guidelines and best practices. Abertay provides ongoing support and refresher options for all qualified trainers.
Note: The UK Resuscitation Council updates its guidelines periodically. As a trainer, you should ensure your knowledge reflects the most current guidance at all times.

Yes! Once you complete the First Aid Trainer / Assessor course, you can teach accredited first aid courses and issue certificates. You will need to register with an awarding body (such as SafeCert, Highfield, or TQUK). Abertay guides you through this registration process and provides ongoing support.
The process: complete your Level 3 qualification → register as an approved trainer with an awarding body → follow quality assurance procedures → issue certificates through the awarding body system.

After completing the First Aid Trainer / Assessor course, you will be qualified to teach:
- First Aid at Work (FAW) — the full 3-day workplace first aid qualification
- Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) — the 1-day emergency qualification
- Annual First Aid Refresher — for existing first aiders
- CPR and AED Awareness — standalone sessions for staff
If you also want to teach Paediatric First Aid, you will need the separate Paediatric First Aid Trainer course.

Yes! After completing your Level 3 First Aid Trainer qualification, you can start your own training business. First Aid training is one of the most in-demand training services in the UK — every workplace is legally required to have trained first aiders, creating a consistent market. Many trainers earn £150–£400 per day as freelance trainers, or £50,000+ running their own training companies. You will receive all the resources you need to start delivering courses immediately.
