It is recommended to complete refresher training every 3 years and maintain annual CPD (Continuing Professional Development) to stay current with fire safety legislation and best practices. Abertay provides ongoing support and refresher options for all qualified trainers.
Note: Fire safety legislation and guidance can be updated periodically. As a trainer, you should ensure your knowledge reflects the most current requirements at all times.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO) is the primary piece of fire safety legislation in England and Wales. It places a legal duty on the "responsible person" (typically the employer or building owner) to:
- Carry out a fire risk assessment and review it regularly
- Implement appropriate fire safety measures
- Provide fire safety information and training to employees
- Ensure adequate means of escape and fire detection
- Maintain fire safety equipment
As a qualified Fire Safety Trainer, you will have a thorough understanding of the RRO and be able to train others on their legal obligations and practical fire safety measures.

No — you do not need to be a fire warden to attend the Fire Safety Trainer course. The course is open to anyone who wants to teach fire safety in the workplace, regardless of their current role.
The course covers fire warden duties as part of the curriculum, so you will gain a thorough understanding of fire warden responsibilities and be fully equipped to train others in this role.
Previous fire safety experience is helpful but not required. The course is designed to take you from beginner to qualified trainer in just two days.
