One of the most common questions we receive at Abertay Training is: "Can I qualify as a First Aid Trainer online?" The answer is yes — and in this article we explain exactly how our live Zoom First Aid Trainer course works, what you'll learn, and why an online qualification is just as credible as attending in person.
Is an Online First Aid Trainer Qualification Recognised?
Absolutely. Our First Aid Trainer course delivered via live Zoom is accredited by the same Ofqual-regulated awarding body as our classroom courses. The certificate you receive is identical — there is no distinction between online and in-person delivery on your qualification. Employers, regulatory bodies, and insurance companies recognise it in exactly the same way.
The key word here is "live". Our Zoom sessions are not pre-recorded videos you watch at your own pace. They are real-time, interactive sessions led by an experienced trainer, with group discussions, Q&A, and practical demonstrations — just delivered through your screen rather than in a training room.
How Does the Live Zoom First Aid Trainer Course Work?
The course typically runs over two days via Zoom. Here is what to expect:
- Day 1 — Knowledge and Theory: You will cover the underpinning first aid knowledge required to teach others, including CPR, AED use, choking, bleeding, shock, burns, fractures, and more. You will also explore adult learning principles, how to structure a training session, and how to manage a training room effectively.
- Day 2 — Teaching Practice and Assessment: You will deliver a short teaching demonstration to the group, receive constructive feedback from the trainer, and complete a written knowledge assessment. Your trainer will observe and assess your competence against the qualification criteria.
All materials, including your course handbook and assessment paperwork, are provided digitally in advance of the course.
What Equipment Do I Need?
To participate in the live Zoom First Aid Trainer course, you will need:
- A computer, laptop, or tablet with a working camera and microphone
- A stable internet connection
- A quiet space where you can participate without interruption
- A resuscitation manikin (CPR dummy) — we can advise on where to source one affordably
- Basic first aid props such as bandages, gloves, and a foil blanket (a full list is provided on booking)
You do not need to purchase an AED for the online course — your trainer will demonstrate its use and you will be assessed on your knowledge of its application.
Is the Online Course Right for Me?
The live Zoom format suits many learners very well, particularly those who:
- Live in areas where classroom venues are not nearby
- Have work or family commitments that make travelling to a venue difficult
- Prefer the flexibility of learning from home
- Are already confident with first aid and primarily need the teaching qualification
If you are completely new to first aid, you may find a classroom course beneficial as it allows more hands-on practice time with equipment. However, many candidates with no prior first aid experience successfully complete the online course — our trainers are skilled at guiding you through practical elements remotely.
What Happens After I Qualify?
Once you have successfully completed the course and passed your assessment, your certificate will be issued by the awarding body — usually within 5–10 working days. You will then be fully qualified to deliver accredited First Aid training to others, whether as an in-house trainer for your employer or as a freelance training professional.
Your qualification is valid for three years, after which a shorter refresher course is required to maintain your accreditation.
